AC Recess recap video & a special thank you!

On October 16th, Aloha Charity hosted AC Recess at George Washington Bicentennial Grove in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. With over 100 people in attendance, 15 teams competed in speed, agility, eating and brain games. Participants stuffed their faces with watermelon, spun in circles, strained their brains and fell over each other to reach the finish line. Congratulations to AC Recess champions “Gnar Patrol” (Steve Rice, Ben Grunat, Davy Grunat and Ben Avery)! Check out all the photos from AC Recess on Facebook in Album #1 & Album #2.

A special thank you to Aidells Sausage Company, DJ CoCo and volunteers! The event’s success was driven by the help of the following volunteers:

  • Kevin Bric
  • Scott Bright
  • Davy Grunat
  • Megan Keir
  • Sean Mann
  • Jenica Mariani

AC Recess raised just over $2,000 and the proceeds funded a field trip for students of Real Options for City Kids (ROCK). 25 kids and 12 Aloha volunteers took a school bus to the University of San Francisco stadium to cheer on the women’s volleyball team on November 16th.

The ROCK kids recently finished a volleyball clinic and Aloha Charity believed it would be fun to reward the students with field trip to a college volleyball game. Most importantly, we saw this as an opportunity to introduce the students to a college campus for their first time.

After a tour of the athletic facility and lunch provided by Aloha, volunteers and students moved to the bleachers for the game. We were the loudest in the crowd, cheering the USF Dons Women’s Volleyball team to their first home game win of the season. After the game, the kids received booklets and posters which they used to get autographs from all the players.

The Aloha volunteers had a wonderful time interacting with the students and students loved having us there.

A special thank you to the Aloha volunteers who chaperoned:

  • Devon Chow
  • Brandon Denham
  • Nicholas Dieringer
  • Megan Keir
  • Cara Luckiesh
  • Gustavo Gomez
  • Javier Gutierrez
  • Kim Soennichsen

Happy Holidays from Aloha Charity. We look forward to seeing you in 2011!

Volunteering at Tel-Hi’s annual spring cleaning

Aloha Charity board members partnered with Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center (Tel-Hi) and other volunteers for Tel-Hi’s annual “Spring Cleaning Event” on Saturday, April 17, 2010. Every year, Tel-Hi holds this event to give their facility a much needed deep clean.

Aloha Charity board members washed baseboards, reorganized furniture, painted bathrooms and cleared overgrown brush. The Tel-Hi volunteer program director later told Aloha Charity board members that the kids noticed the changes right away and were excited by the new look.

Founded in 1890, Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center (Tel-Hi) builds community strength for the neighborhoods of northeast San Francisco in three ways:

  • Tel-Hi provides services for 600 people each day to increase their well-being.
  • Tel-Hi brings the neighborhood together through celebrations and civic pursuits.
  • Tel-Hi increases its impact through long-term partnerships and collaborations.

For more information about Tel-Hi, please visit www.tel-hi.org.

Earth Day Happy Hour - Aventine 4/22

On Thursday, April 22nd, Aloha Charity is hosting an EARTH DAY Happy Hour fundraiser at Aventine.

Enjoy a drink (or two or three) and donate to charity! We will have a private bar, a slue of awesome silent auction items to bid on and a charity drink of the night the “tree hugger”! $10 at the door and 100% of the proceeds go to benefit the Homeless Children’s Network. The proceeds will go towards providing a more eco-friendly environment for the children at HCN.

More on the HCN:
Homeless Children’s Network (HCN) provides comprehensive mental health services, case management, and family support services for homeless children, youth, and their families throughout San Francisco. Their goal is to decrease the traumas associated with homelessness and domestic violence, to increase the strength and effectiveness of the HCN Collaborative, and to provide early childhood education and consultation to shelter-based child care and family childcare providers.

Clean-up day at A Home Away From Homelessness

On February 21st, a portion of the funds raised from “Streets of San Francisco“, the New Year’s Eve event, were used to help in a clean-up day at A Home Away From Homelessness, a non-profit organization that nurtures and supports the needs of homeless and formerly homeless children and families in San Francisco and Marin. Four “homes” provide a physical, emotional and spiritual break for children living in dire situations.

Aloha Charity donated two wet/dry vacuum cleaners, two dozen movie passes and five sleeping bags for future field trips. Members of Aloha Charity cleaned alongside students and staff, mopping, cleaning rugs and washing windows. The students were rewarded with movie passes as a thank you for spending the holiday participating in the clean-up. The remaining funds will be used to purchase field trip gear, encyclopedias and desks for A Home Away From Homelessness.

Supporting Project Night Night

Money raised from the North Beach Bar Run held in September was used to support Project Night Night. Project Night Night donates over 25,000 Night Night Packages each year, free of charge, to homeless children who need childhood essentials to feel secure, cozy, ready to learn, and significant. Each Night Night Package contains a new security blanket, an age-appropriate children’s book, and a stuffed animal — all nestled inside of a new canvas tote bag.

On February 4th, members of Aloha Charity put together 70 Night Night Packages for children living at multiple San Francisco homeless shelters. In addition to the Night Night Packages, Aloha Charity organized an arts and crafts project for the children living at Harbor House. Members of Aloha Charity gave each of the 12 children a water bottle and notebook which they decorated with stickers, puffy paints and markers. The children loved their Night Night Packages, newly decorated bottles/notebooks, and the time spent with members of Aloha Charity.

I Choo-Choo Choose You

Aloha Charity partnered with Dan Darcy to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by hosting a pre-Valentine’s Day fundraiser, “I Choo Choo Choose You” on February 11, 2010. “I Choo-Choo Choose You” was held at Gravity and over 300 people attended the popular 6th annual event. Dan is a San Francisco native who hosts fundraising benefits to support various charities.

Highlights of the night included drink specials and the chance to find a Valentine just days before February 14th. 14 men and women volunteered to be raffled off for dates and the winners were announced at the end of the night. In total, over $4000 was raised for LLS! Thank you everyone who attended!

Aloha Charity Continues to Break Fundraising Records!

In partnership with CrawlSF, Aloha Charity co-hosted the “Streets of San Francisco” New Years Eve 2009 event at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. The event raised over $3,400 for A Home Away From Homelessness and provided an amazing New Years Eve for over 2,500 people! Prior to the event, Aloha Charity auctioned off three VIP Charity Tables that included unlimited bottle service, event tickets and dozens of high-value amenities (Bay cruise tickets, restaurant and spa gift certificates, paintball and rock climbing packages, and SF Giants memorabilia). We are excited to donate 100% of the proceeds towards fulfilling the wishes of A Home Away From Homelessness.

A Home Away From Homelessness is a non-profit organization that supports homeless children and families in San Francisco and Marin county. Through the provision of a safe and supportive space, paired with educational, social and recreational opportunities, this non-profit aims to foster strength, creativity and confidence in the children it supports.

Painting with the kids of Up On Top

On October 16th, Aloha Charity were excited to see eight long months of planning and fundraising come to fruition while painting with the children of “Up On Top.” This terrific opportunity allowed our group to interact with a fun and creative group of young elementary school students. With the generous donation of a hand-made mural by Nancy Smith, we gave the children creative control of their own painting. This custom canvas mural now proudly hangs over the workspace that Up on Top has named “The Aloha Charity Learning Center.”
